PRESS RELEASE

STATE OF OHIO
DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE

Ohioans Advised to Check Insurance for Sewer Backup Coverage (www.ODINewRoom@ins.state.oh.us

COLUMBUS -  Recent heavy rains have caused an overburden on some local sewer systems, which have led to sewer backups that have damaged Ohioans’ homes.   Ohio Department of Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson is urging Ohioans to contact their homeowner insurance agent if their homes have been damaged by a sewer back-up to begin the claims process, and is reminding Ohioans to review their insurance policies to determine if they are adequately covered.

“Backed up sewers can damage flooring, furniture and electrical equipment.  Replacing all of that as well as cleaning up from the damage can cost thousands of dollars,” Director Hudson said. “Ohioans should check with their agents to see if they have that additional coverage in the event they are impacted by a backed up sewer.”

Sewer backups or the inability of sump pumps to handle runoff water from a major downpour are not covered by a typical homeowner insurance policy nor are they covered by flood insurance.  Those types of coverages must be purchased as a separate product or endorsement, called “water backup of sewers and drains”.

Director Hudson is offering these tips to Ohioans who have suffered damage due to a sewer backup or a sump pump failure:

If You Have Suffered Damage to a Sewer Backup:

·         Call your insurance company as soon as you can. Be sure your agent knows how to contact you.

  • Without endangering yourself, take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage.
  • Closely inspect property and cars for damage. Note and photograph any damage.
  • Provide your insurance agent with your home inventory.  This will assist in settling claims.
  • If required to seek temporary housing, check your policy for “loss of use” coverage.
  • Be sure everything is considered in your claim. Back up claims with written estimates.

------YOU HAVE OPTIONS!  You may chose protection for $2500, $5000, $10000, $15000, $25000, $50000 and even higher with some companies.  Even if you have the protection on your policy, is the limit substantial if you were to get 3” of sewer water covering your entire basement?

CALL US TODAY to add or increase your protection!  We are as near as your email,  the phone, the fax, or best yet, come visit us at our office!

(North Canton, Ohio) July 7, 2008 - What do ovens, automobiles and vacations have in common? Women are making the buying decisions regarding all three in record numbers. But far from being concerned with only material possessions or leisure activities, today’s women are interested in a secure financial future for themselves and their families. A local insurance expert and female business owner will address the role insurance plays in maintaining financial health at two upcoming Women & Money seminars.

The Women & Money seminar, a free program sponsored by the State of Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray, was developed to offer women valuable information, presented by experts in their field, regarding many important financial decisions. Despite the powerful role women play in our economy, women still earn, on average, less than men. This means that women also tend to have smaller pensions and retirement savings. Add to this the fact that women typically have longer life spans than men, and it becomes evident that women need their money to stretch farther and work harder for them.

Barbara Fausnight, president of Executive Insurance Group in North Canton, brings her unique background to her presentations, to be held August 8 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton and August 15 in Akron. In addition to insurance, other topics being presented include budgeting, credit and debt, entrepreneurship, investments, identity theft, retirement, estate planning, elder care, home ownership, and kids and money.

“It is gratifying to see more and more women venturing into entrepreneurship,” says Fausnight, who has successfully grown the business she founded 30 years ago while raising a family of three children. “At the same time, women are also making more decisions regarding family finances, and this means that we are more interested than ever in the financial health of our families.”
